The glossy and beautiful sound of this SACD hybrid disc of Russian string orchestral works. Sakari Oramo, principal conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, conducts the Ostrobothnia Chamber Orchestra of his native Finland in this collection of Russian string orchestra works. The majority of the content is arrangements, with Prokofiev's "A Brief Vision" arranged by Barshai and Scriabin's Preludes by contemporary Finnish composer Jouni Kaipainen as the main works. Both originals are piano pieces and are early works by both. Prokofiev's Preludes are 15 out of 20, and Scriabin's Preludes are 13 out of 24, selected and arranged, and the order of the pieces has been changed. Scriabin's Preludes, Op.11, which were written before he had yet to establish his mystic language, are beautiful works with Chopin-like delicacy and the transparent lyricism of early Scriabin. Oramo's singing and the lustrous sound of the string orchestra will bring out new charms. Variations on a Theme of Tchaikovsky" by Arensky, Scriabin's teacher, was originally written as the second movement of String Quartet No. 2 and arranged for string orchestra by Arensky himself.The theme of Tchaikovsky's song "Legend" Op.54, No. 5, is followed by a series of variations on the theme that are rich in Russian sentiment. Tchaikovsky's "Elegy" included at the end is an original string orchestra piece. It was written in celebration of Ivan Summerlin, who directed the premiere of the opera "Evgeny Onegin," but did not allow it to be published, and upon Summerlin's death, it was released as "Elegy in Memory of Summerlin.
